A 59-year-old man and his two-year-old grandson were killed in a road mishap when their car was hit by a truck twice near Chharodi village under Sanand taluka on Tuesday night. The mishap took place at a point where there was road diversion because of ongoing construction.
According to Sanand police, the victims were identified as Shivram Parmar and his grandson Chirag. They died on the spot. The other three who were in the car were badly injured and they were rushed to VS Hospital. Later, they were shifted to a private hospital in Ahmedabad.
The mishap took place 23 kilometres away from Sanand police station on Sanand-Viramgam highway around 9:45 pm. First a truck hit the car parked on the roadside, then another truck coming from the same direction hit the first truck which, in turn, hit the car again.
The impact of the collision was so fierce that the car got completely smashed and was dragged a few metres away. The passengers in the car were coming from Bhuj to CTM in Ramol to meet their relatives.
The mishap caused traffic jam on both sides of the highway for nearly an hour. "For more than two kilometres from both sides of the highway, the traffic was blocked. We had to bring cranes to remove the mangled car to restore the traffic flow,'' said an official from Sanand police station.
Police officials said that the accident occurred mainly because of the diversion, which the truck drivers couldn't see at night.
