Azhar, who hails from Jharkhand and had criminal cases against him there, told the police that one person had assigned him the task of killing the real estate agent.

A 26-year-old man, hailing from Jharkhand, has been arrested for allegedly attempting to murder a real estate agent here, police said today.

Mohammed Tabrez Azhar (26) fired at Shabbir Memon (31), but the bullet missed the latter. Azhar was caught by passers-by, but his two aides managed to flee from the spot at Gulshan Nagar in suburban Jogeshwari, they said, adding Memon had not received any threats previously.

According to police, Memon was driving his Honda car last night when he was attacked by the trio.

After the bullet hit the vehicle, the three ran from the spot, but the passers-by pounced on them, Datta Sankhe, inspector at Oshiwara police station, said.

While two of them managed to escape, Azhar was caught by locals and handed over to police, he added. A pistol and six live rounds were recovered from him.

"Azhar, who hails from Jharkhand and had criminal cases against him there, told us that one person had assigned him the task of killing Memon," Sankhe said.

Further investigations are on.
