A man poured acid into his wife's eyes and mouth in a bid to kill her. Police said he suspected her of having an extra-marital affair. The victim, 40-year-old Rita (name changed), is in a critical situation. The police have arrested the accused, John Abraham Christian, and registered a case of attempt to murder against him.

The incident occurred at Rita's house in Adishwar society, Naroda on Thursday night. Naroda police said John Christian, who had recently returned from Gulf where he worked, had an altercation with his wife over some trivial issue on Thursday night. John suspected his wife, a teacher at A-One Xavier School, was having extra-marital affair with one Satish who works in a powerloom factory in Naroda.

The Naroda police arrested Christian on the basis of statement of his daughter Riya who is the eyewitness to the incident. Naroda police inspector BM Vasava said, "Police have registered a case of attempt to murder against the John. Rita's condition, however, is said to be critical."

According to report, on Thursday night Rita, John Abraham and their 17-year-old daughter Riya were at home. The couple had an altercation over some issue with John alleging that Rita had an extra-marital affair. Sources said that irked over the altercation,  John allegedly assaulted his wife with knife. Rita, who had sustained two knife injuries, was bleeding profusely, when an infuriated John allegedly poured acid into a glass and poured that into Rita's eyes and mouth. After the incident, John fled his house.

John's daughter, the only eyewitness to the incident, raised an alarm for help. Soon neighbours gathered at the spot and Rita was rushed to a private hospital from where she was referred to Civil hospital. The couple has two children. Elder son Jogin (22), who works with a private company, was not present at the time of the incident.

Later on Friday, Naroda police arrested John, who in his statement before the police said he suspected his wife of infidelity and had also got evidence that she had gone through an abortion recently.
