Manipur in favour of NRC, state cabinet has passed a resolution: CM N Biren Singh

After the implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam to root out illegal immigrants, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Monday said that his government is in favour of implementing the measure in his state. 

"Manipur in favour of NRC in the state. The state cabinet has already passed a resolution on it," Biren Singh was quoted as saying by ANI.

"We and many of the states in the northeast need NRC. The Manipur government has already taken a decision in the cabinet to have NRC," Singh said on the sidelines of the North-East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) conclave.

Singh said there is a very clear message from the Centre that no illegal immigrant will be allowed to stay anywhere in the country.

When asked about the state's plan on how to implement the NRC, Singh said it will be done through the central government.

"Assam is doing it under the supervision of the Supreme Court. So we are requesting the central government and it will be done by them," he said. 

This came as Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that the government wants to make the whole country free of infiltrators and not just Assam.

"In all states, especially in Assam, people have expressed concern for NRC, both different queries. They think that many people have been left out of NRC. Smaller states have concerns that those left out in NRC could come to their states. I want to assure that no infiltrator can live in Assam and they cannot enter other states because we want to make the whole country free of infiltrators, not just Assam," he said while speaking at the NEDA meeting in Guwahati on Monday.

In the final Assam NRC list published on August 31, more than 3.11 crore persons were found eligible for inclusion in the final list while little more than 19 lakh were left out, including those who did not submit their claims after being excluded from the draft list published last year.
