Manmohan leaves for Germany

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh left for Germany on a four-day visit that is expected to push economic and strategic ties between India and Germany.

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh left for Germany on Saturday on a four-day visit that is expected to push economic and strategic ties between Europe's industrial titan and Asia's rising star to a new level and deepen synergy on major global issues.

Commerce Minister Kamal Nath, Science and Technology Minister Kapil Sibal, National Security Adviser M.K. Narayanan and Foreign Secretary Shyam Saran were among those who accompanied the prime minister.

The prime minister is expected to reach Hanover in the evening. He will inaugurate the Hanover Fair, the world's largest trade and technology event that has India as the partner country, on Monday.

Manmohan Singh will hold talks with German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Sunday on a wide range of bilateral issues, including trade and technological ties, military cooperation, energy security and civil nuclear cooperation.

Three agreements are likely to be signed between India and Germany in the fields of railways, medical research and quality control.
