'Never in the past has the CAG decided to comment on a policy issue. It should limit the office to the role defined in the Constitution,' Singh said.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was today criical of the comptroller and auditor general (CAG) for going beyond the mandate and for going public with his views.

"It has never been in the past that the CAG has held a press conference as the present CAG has done.

"Never in the past has the CAG decided to comment on a policy issue.  It should limit the office to the role defined in the Constitution," Singh told a group of editors at an interaction at his official residence here.

He was apparently referring to the rare press conference addressed by the CAG officials after the tabling of the report on the 2G scam in Parliament.
