Move comes hours after high court orders status quo on land allotment

LUCKNOW: The political confrontation between Sonia Gandhi and Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayawati intensified on Monday with the district administration clamping prohibitory orders in Rae Bareli where the Congress president was due to address a rally on Tuesday.

“We have decided to impose prohibitory order under Section 144 CrPC tomorrow [Tuesday],” PTI quoted Rae Bareli district magistrate Santosh Srivastav as saying.
Sonia cancelled her plans for the rally but will go ahead with her tour of Rae Bareli, Congress said.

The prohibitory order came hours after the Allahabad high court, on a petition filed by the railways, ordered a virtual stay on the state’s decision to cancel the allotment of land for a railway project at Lalganj in Rae Bareli, Sonia’s Lok Sabha constituency.

The state cancelled the allotment on Sunday claiming that land holders were angry and the situation in the area was volatile.
