Meet Praveen Sood, Karnataka IPS officer appointed as new CBI director

IPS officer Praveen Sood is currently serving as the DGP of Karnataka.

IPS Praveen Sood has been appointed as the new Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for a period of two years. He is a 1986 batch IPS officer of the Karnataka cadre. Sood is currently serving as the Director General of Police (DGP) of Karnataka. He was appointed as the state DGP three years ago.

He is an alumnus of IIT Delhi and hails from Himachal Pradesh. He was to retire in May 2024, but will now get a two-year fixed tenure. Present CBI director Subodh Kumar Jaiswal completes his tenure on May 25.

He started his career as assistant superintendent of police (ASP) in Mysore in 1989. He later served as the SP of Bellary and Raichur. Subsequently, he was transferred to Bengaluru city as deputy commissioner of police (law and order). In 1999, he went for a foreign deputation as a police advisor to the Government of Mauritius for three years where he worked closely with European and American police.

Sood also worked as principal secretary of the Home Department, additional director general of police, Karnataka State Reserve Police and additional director general of police, Administration.

Sood's appointment comes after a high-level committee shortlisted three senior IPS officers for the post of CBI Director. For the inversed, the CBI Director is selected by a committee comprising the Prime Minister, CJI and the Leader of Opposition (LoP) in Lok Sabha for a fixed 2 years tenure. It can be extended up to five years.
