She gave up her full-time job in an IT company because she wanted to teach kids. Hailing from a middle class Bengali family, Roshni Mukherjee was a good student and she realised she had a passion for teaching as she grew older. Once she started working, the passion grew stronger and she gave up her job to start Examfear.com which provides quality education free of cost to students. In four years, Mukherjee has created more than 4000 video lessons on Physics, Mathematics, Biology and Chemistry. In a chat with dna, she tells us her story and what she hopes to do in future.

How did you come up with the idea of Examfear?

I started creating ExamFear videos in 2011, while I was working as a Quality Analyst with an IT company. I always had a passion for teaching. In fact, in college, I used to get a lot of feedback from friends and others stating that I teach really well. I could sense a huge scope for improvement in teaching methods. Lack of good teachers and schools with quality education in remote areas, prompted me to start creating online video lessons so that I can reach students across India. Quality education is quite expensive which makes it unaffordable for many parents. Therefore, my motto was to provide free quality education. I knew Internet has a solution to everything. An online platform was the best option to reach people all over India.

What is the teaching method adopted on the website?

There are more than 4000 video lessons on Physics, Chemistry, Maths, Biology on ExamFear. I always try to explain a concept in simple terms taking examples from our day-to-day life. I also make use of pictures and animation as required. Each lesson is followed by some questions and problems with solutions so that it helps students to better understand the application of the concepts.

You provide free education online. What are some of the challenges you face?

Time management was the biggest challenge faced during the initial years as I was working for an IT company. In the initial years, I spent all my weekends and a couple of hours at night on weekdays creating these videos. Now, I am dedicated full-time to ExamFear, creating videos and trying to make it bigger and better. I plan to expand the website in terms of creating more content, translating the content into regional languages, etc. Each of these involves cost. That is why I am started an option for viewers to ‘pay as you like’ on the website.

What inspires you every day to help students?

The appreciation from my students and viewers on my YouTube channel keeps me motivated to create more and more videos. It is this motivation that has helped ExamFear grow and expand in the last four years.
