In a clash that broke out between the police and the public in Juhapura on Saturday night, three policemen were injured and a police jeep was set ablaze by the furious mob. The incident took place when the Vejalpur police went to rescue more than a dozen cows which were allegedly going to be slaughtered ahead of the festival of Eid-ul-Zuha on November 7.
According to eyewitnesses, the police had recovered the cows from a place at Juhapura crossroads near the water tank and were leaving when one of the vehicles, a jeep, fell behind the rest of the fleet. Police said hundreds of people who had gathered at the spot started pelting stones at the police.
"The police control room received a message that cows had been found in Juhapura. A police team was sent to the spot and they rescued more than a dozen cows. However, one jeep fell behind the fleet and it was attacked by some people. After pelting stones, the mob set the jeep on fire," said Ajay Tomar, joint commissioner of police, sector-1. He added that three policemen had sustained
injuries in the incident.
Soon after the incident, the police, including officials from the crime branch, poured into the area. Extra police force was requisitioned and has been deployed for combing.
Sandip Singh, deputy commissioner of police, Zone-1, said that patrolling in the area had been intensified, though no one had been arrested yet.
