Modi govt announces free ration to poor families for two months

In the meeting held with the states on Friday, many Chief Ministers had placed this demand in front of the central government.

In view of the second wave of coronavirus, the Central Government has made a big decision and once again has announced to give free ration to poor families. Under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PM Gareeb Kalyan Ann Yojana), ration card holders will now be able to take 5 kg more rice and wheat per person in the month of May and June.

Taking to microblogging website Twitter, Union Home Minister Amit Shah wrote in Hindi, "In view of the increasing impact of coronavirus, I welcome Prime Minister Narendra Modi's decision to provide 5 kg of food grains for two months under the Prime Minister Garib Kalyan Yojana at for Rs 26,000 crore. This will benefit about 80 crore people of the country. Modi government is standing with the countrymen every step in this disaster."

PM Modi has made this announcement at a time when many states are demanding an economic package from the central government. In the meeting held with the states on Friday, many Chief Ministers had placed this demand in front of the government. 

The Prime Minister said that strict restrictions have been implemented in wake of the COVID-19 crisis, due to which the economy has been damaged and people are starting to face hunger crisis. To deal with this, the government has announced free ration.
