Monsoon rains are on track to hit the country's southern coast on May 30, and Cyclone Laila in the Bay of Bengal would not derail the vital June-September rainfall, weather office spokesperson BP Yadav told Reuters.
Some weather officials had blamed the Aila cyclone of May 2009 for the last year's drought, the worst in 37 years, but Yadav said the India meteorological department believes that this year's rains would be normal despite the storm.
