More than 500 gamblers were caught by the Ahmedabad police during this festive season in last 10 days. These gamblers varied from businessmen to elderly women residing in posh areas.
The police were in no mood to allow any gambling activity to continue as they raided farm houses, bungalows, flats and hotels across the city and caught 502 people involved in gambling.
Police also recovered more than Rs15 lakh from these gamblers during the raids.
On the night of Janmashtami on Monday, police caught 254 gamblers from various parts of the city.
According to commissioner of police Sudhir Sinha, the huge number of arrests was possible because of a recent circular. According to the circular, a PSI can raid a suspected gambling place without having a warrant while the policemen were given the liberty to strike at gamblers' places.
However, Sinha said: "No major gambling racket was busted or kingpin was nabbed in these raids, which shows that organised gambling didn't take place in the city."
