Two-and-a-half years since he abdicated SP chief's post in favour of his son Akhilesh Yadav, Mulayam Singh Yadav addressed a press conference at the Samajwadi Party office on Tuesday in support of the last of the few left party stalwarts – Mohd Azam Khan.
Rampur MP Mohd Azam Khan has been booked in more than 75 cases with allegations as serious as of loot and land grabbing.
What has surprised many is that SP patron Mulayam Singh Yadav was once again at the Centre of state politics appealing SP workers and cadre to stand in support of Mohd Azam Khan.
The octogenarian Mulayam was escorted to the dais by his security personnel and senior SP leader Arvind Yadav as both held the party patriarch's hand towards the only chair placed for the press conference.
Despite the age he is in and much to the surprise of the media persons, the astute politician in Mulayam Singh Yadav remained on fore throughout during the press conference as he kept his focus on appealing support for Mohd Azam Khan. Even the questions like his reaction on Article 370 and the lesson from BSP discarding alliance with SP after Lok Sabha elections didn't deviate him from his focus to appeal in support of Azam.
No wonder Mulayam and Azam had been close friends with Azam remaining loyal to 'Netaji' and the party Mulayam formed, even then the onus to mobilise party workers had remained with former chief minister Akhilesh Yadav as he has been Samajwadi Party national president since 2017.
