A massive fire broke out at a Bharat Petroleum refinery in central Mumbai’s Chembur area on Wednesday. The fire officials said that the cause of the blaze was explosions in Hydrogen tank in the refinery.
‘The blaze occurred at BPCL’s Mahul plant today at around 2: 45pm. The fire was in the Compressor shed of Hydrocracker plant. The fire is being fought by The Refinery fire fighting team. The fire is still on but is under control,’ BPCL spokesperson Sundararajan told DNA.
He also said that 43 people were injured in the fire. They were being taken to hospital for further treatment.
The plant at Mahul road in Chembur area of Mumbai caught fire at around 3 pm, the official said.
Algapuri was at another unit when the explosion took place. ‘There was huge, unbearable sound,’ he told DNA.
This could have been a bigger disaster as normally there are about 20 to 30 workers working in the plant.
Seven fire engines and two foam tenders have been pressed into service to douse the blaze, the official said.
The explosion was so intense that tremors were felt till Deonar.
