In the years to come, Mumbai is likely to have a couple of new tourist destinations. The Mumbai Port Trust (MbPT) is working on a plan to have a 'Tourist Village' just next to the proposed Marina inside the port land premises.
Though the plan is at the conceptual stage with detailed workings yet to be done, the location identified is Princess Dock inside MbPT. Having a Tourist Village along with Marina, is also part of the larger plans of Port Land Development that is on cards for the last couple of years now.
The plans on the paper suggest that starting from the southern end of the docks, where the current International Cruise Terminal is situated, the size of this terminal will be increased to accommodate increase berthing facilities. Next to it will be Marina followed by Tourist Village and eventually Passenger Ferry Terminal to connect with Nerul and Mandwa.
"While the revamped international cruise terminal will be open for Mumbaikars only when it is vacant of cruise liners, here the Tourist Village will be available for people to relax around the year," said an MbPT official.
A consultant will be appointed to prepare Detailed Project Report to have this latest attraction of Mumbai over a land of 3-4 hectares (both, Marina and Tourist Village). As part of the initial ideas it is proposed to also have a mini amusement park facility for children to enjoy.
"There would obviously be restaurants and other attractions that would help in relaxing people at a waterfront," said an official. It will take a couple of months for the MbPT officials to appoint a consultant and eventually get the project report ready. The final product for Mumbaikar's entertainment is expected to be ready only after a couple of years.
