Mumbai-Pune Expressway: Traffic jam reported after container overturns

A container going towards Mumbai from Pune overturned in the middle of the road today, affecting the traffic on Pune-Mumbai Expressway.

The incident took place on near Amrutanjan bridge near Lonavala.

The Mumbai-Pune Expressway is a 94-km-long expressway that connects the two Maharashtra cities. The expressway carries huge traffic between the two cities. It is also infamous for accidents and is counted among the deadliest expressways in the country. 

The number of accidents has only increased in the recent past. Although the number of fatal accidents resulting in casualties have decreased, according to state highway police data. 

The year 2017 witnessed lowest deaths in the past five years, wherein there were 360 accidents in which 105 lost their lives.

The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation has decided to construct two interchanges on the expressway to enhance safety and boost connectivity.

The interchanges have been proposed at Khalapur and at Kiwali, at Pune end. 

 

During the Christmas weekend in December last year, the expressway experienced day-long traffic snarls which were brought on by a major accident.
