The Tamil Nadu government today said that Nalini, serving life term in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, had made several calls from the mobile phone recovered from her cell in the high-security Vellore prison including to her daughter and the call records are being probed.
Informing the state assembly, law minister Duraimurugan said the 'Q' branch wing of state police, which is analysing call records of the phone, was further probing into the calls made and received.
"We will share whatever information we get on this matter regularly with you," he said intervening senior Congress member D Sudarassanam who raised the issue while participating in a debate for grants on the Home department.
Sudarassanam alleged lack of enough surveillance on Nalini which allowed her access to a mobile phone and expressed concern at this since she was convicted in the assassination of a former prime minister and that she had been making calls to foreign countries for the past one year.
He advised that the state could seek the Centre's assistance in technical knowhow to crack the phone records.
The mobile phone was recovered from Nalini's prison cell on April 20 during a routine check by prison officials. The state government had handed over the analysis of the phone records to 'Q' branch, which deals with extremist activities in the state.
Nalini had made calls to foreign countries including Sri Lanka and Britain.
