The money is towards building an operation theatre complex at the Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology in Bengaluru.

The founder of Infosys Narayana Murthy and his wife Sudha Murthy are known to be philanthropists. They are now set to donate Rs 40 crore for building an operation theatre complex at the Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology in Bengaluru. They will also give a further Rs 8 crore towards the construction of another block and Rs 2 crore for renovating an existing block.

The New Indian Express quotes Sudha Murthy as stating, “Our goal is to serve the needy and we will assist Kidwai with its efforts. The treatment and care provided by the institution gives cancer patients a better life.” She was speaking at a function to lay the foundation stone for the new Dharamshala Block.

According to the report, Dr Linge Gowda, director of the institute, said the existing Dharamshala Block would be renovated at an estimated cost of Rs 2 crore. He is quoted as saying that in the next 10 months, five more operation theatres and a fully-equipped complex for cancer care will be constructed.

The National Cancer Registry Programme of Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) estimates that, on an average, one in 15 men and one in 12 women in urban centres are at risk of developing cancer. Dr Linge added that their aim was to make the institute the number one in the country for its care and treatment.
