In an instance of blending social awareness with festivities, revellers in Surat this Navratri will use their bodies as message boards to flaunt tattoos to spread awareness regarding social issues.

The tattoo appeals range from saving the girl child to protecting the environment.

Manisha Patel, 24, and Priya Modi, 22, from in Surat are two such enthusiasts eagerly waiting to show off their dancing skills and social messages.

We decided to get tattoos with social messages. We think it is an innovative way to create awareness,” said Manisha, who has a tattoo about pollution and saving the earth.

She said several people come to watch garbha and this way the tattoo messages can reach many.

“Even if 5% of the people become more environment conscious, I will think my efforts have paid off,” she said.

Priya decided to get a tattoo on saving the girl child as being a woman the issue is very close to her heart.

“The drop in sex ratio is a problem that needs to be addressed. If discrimination against the girl child continues we are heading for a disaster,” said Priya.
