The Uttar Pradesh government is considering instituting an enquiry to ascertain whether the deaths, attributed to the swine flu infection, were actually caused by the virus.

"An audit of deaths caused by swine flu in the last one week should be carried out so as to clearly ascertain the real cause of death," health minister Anant Kumar Mishra said during a seminar yesterday.

He said that the Centre was not providing adequate number of ventilators and tamiflu tablets to check cases of swine flu in the state.

"So far the state had received only seven lakh tamiflu tablets, which is very low considering UP's population," he said.

"As lakhs of pilgrims and tourists will reach Allahabad during Magh Mela, we need cooperation of the Centre," he added.

Mishra directed the health department officials to take minimum response time in attending to fresh cases of swine flu so that more lives could be saved.

"The state had made effective arrangements. As against 800 deaths across the country, in UP where 704 cases were detected, only 10 deaths have been reported so far," he claimed.
