The newly opened international terminal at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International airport (SVPI) has bagged the second best steel structure award in an all-India open competition popularly known as National Structural Steel Design and Construction Award (2009-10).

The competition is conducted by Institute for Steel Development and Growth (INSDAG), Ministry of Steel.

The new international terminal has been built on the lines of Changi airport in Singapore with a whopping Rs300 crore. It started functioning from September last year. According to NK Shukla, general manager, engineering projects, the terminal has been chosen as the second best in terms of its construction and overall utility for the end users at large. He said that he will be receiving the prize of Rs1.25 lakh in cash along with a trophy and certificate.

ECS Techno Park in Chennai is said to have won the first place in the competition in which over 100 entries had been submitted. Interestingly, the third prize went jointly to the new international terminals built at Amritsar and Thiruvanantapuram airports.

There were various other airports which had participated in the event but the construction of SVPI's international terminal caught the jury's fancy and they visited the terminal before choosing it as the second best steel construction in the country.

The entry of the city airport terminal was sent by NK Shukla from Airport Authority of India. Shukla said that the prizes will be distributed in a grand function that will be held in New Delhi on February 18.

He said that the parameters for giving an award to a particular construction rested mostly on factors such as excellence, efficiency, aesthetics and cost."
