The new emergency helpline number '112' has become active from today (Wednesday) in Delhi. '112' will be the common helpline number for all kinds of emergency services including police, ambulance, fire brigade and others.
People seeking the help of police during emergency situations will now have to call on '112' to report their matters instead of '100' which is currently in use.
Although the new emergency helpline number '112' has been put to service from today, the old number '100' will also remain active for a few days.
Upon dialing '112', the caller will be promoted to select '8' for accessing emergency services. Also, it will send the caller's location automatically once a person would seek for the emergency help using the '112' service.
Just like '911' emergency helpline in US, India has started '112' to assist citizens during emergency situations.
