It’s that time of the year again when people have to be reminded of the folly of drinking and driving. There are few things stupider than drunk driving. However, there may be people who have imbibed say a pint of beer and are wondering if they can drink and then drive.

It’s that time of the year again when people have to be reminded of the folly of drinking and driving. There are few things stupider than drunk driving. However, there may be people who have imbibed say a pint of beer and are wondering if they can drink and then drive.

Well we have you covered. First, let’s assume you are not underage which verifies from 18 to 25 in India. In the US or UK, one is allowed to drink and drive with less than 80 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood. In India however, the limit is set at .03% which works out to 30mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood.

This works out to different figures depending on body weight but the average male weighing 65 kg can stay within legal limit if he drinks

  1. 2 pints of beer (660ml) so if you have one large bottle (750ml) you are advised not to drink.
  2. One large peg of whisky (60ml)
  3. Two glasses of wine (200ml)

How long should I wait before driving?

Anything more than that, and you are advised to wait.

Now it takes your body an hour to process 30 ml of alcohol, so if you have had more than two pint, one whisky or two glasses of wine, wait at least nine minutes.

But it’s really better not to fool around, and just call a cab or get an auto.

Happy New Year folks. Stay safe.
