Fruity style is a way to healthy lifestyle: This is the new mantra at the National Institute of Design (NID)'s post graduate campus at Gandhinagar. Owing to the new mantra — spicy and tongue tickling junk food — samosas and burger have become less popular.
And, what has become fashionable for students residing at the PG campus is having variety of fruits- apple, papaya or pomegranate in evening- between the meals.
The concept of having fruits in place of junk food in the evening was born out of students' project of 'service design for community'- by students of strategic design management discipline.
Three students - Vaibhav Vyas, Avnika Kapoor and Subhash Chandra Gupta chose to design a service for students' community at NID PG campus in Gandhinagar.
As per the concept- Fruitful, three students took up the task of encouraging students to have variety of fruits and fruit salads in the evening breaks than to splurge over oily, spicy and unhealthy junk food available in the mess.
After designing the Fruitful- with single fruit servings and fruits with different topping and sauces - the service was made available to students where fresh banana, papaya, apple, pomegranate and pears were served in the evening. The idea clicked so much that the NID is officially launching the 'Fruitful' at its Gandhinagar campus as mess contractor is adopting the service designed by students and will be providing fruits at cheaper rate from new semester starting November 15.
"The primary aim of this service was to spread awareness about the importance of specific fruits for specific health ailments and for future preventions and also to incorporate the habit of eating fruits in between meals more than any other snack," said Vaibhav stating the fruit dishes will be available from the range of Rs10 to Rs20.
Talking about the business plan, he said they approached a famous chain in Infocity that provide fresh and quality fruits at cheaper rate. "We chalked out model with them where they provide us with fresh fruits at cheaper rate and whoever buys fruit dish from Fruitful will be given discount coupons of the store to boost their business," he said.
Alomi Chishi, one of the students of the same discipline liked the concept. She believes, since the PG campus is an area where fresh fruits are not available, 'Fruitful' will lead them to healthy lifestyle. "When you eat samosas and burgers, they are acidic and create health problem. More over, it is filling and also makes students sleepy during the evening class. Having fruits in place of snacks also keeps tummy light apart from giving nutrients to our body," she said.
Not only this, the three have also prepared a chart and menu where they have listed advantages of having fruits, and not junk food, offered by the mess.
