“The Congress would not be responsible if something untoward happens in this context, or if any Congress worker comes up with a reaction,” party spokesperson Shakeel Ahmed said.

Ahmed’s not-so-veiled threat has come in the wake of Gadkari’s refusal to apologise for remarks against the Congress for the delay in hanging parliament attack convict Afzal Guru. At a public meeting in Dehradun, Gadkari had come up with a poser to the Congress. “Is he [Afzal] your son-in-law? Have you given your daughter to him in marriage?”

This is the first time that the Congress has officially responded to a statement by Gadkari. So far, party spokespersons had refrained from commenting, with a rider that Gadkari’s stature did not merit a response. So, does the reaction from the party mean Gadkari’s stature has gone up? “Even when spokespersons maintained it was beneath them to comment, they were condemning him,” Ahmed said.

Earlier, Congress spokesperson Manish Tewari had said that Gadkari should be sent to a psychiatric facility.  “Obscenity, obnoxiousness, obtuseness should not be dignified by a response. It is very obvious that the esteemed president of the BJP has lost it completely. The BJP should take pity and deposit him in a psychiatric facility,” Tewari said.

The BJP reacted strongly to Tewari's comments and sought an apology from the Congress for its “uncivilised” comment.
