A Delhi court today issued show-cause notice to Uttar Pradesh jail authorities over their failure to produce underworld don Babloo Srivastava before it in an extortion case.
Additional sessions judge Shalinder Kaur sought response
from the superintendent of Bareilly jail through a notice sent
to Inspector General (IG) Prisons for May 31.
The court specifically directed that the notice should be sent to them through courier to ensure its delivery.
"No response was received on production warrant issued against the accused. Issue show-cause notice to superintendent of jail through IG Prisons to explain as to why the accused has not been produced," the court said.
The hearing in the matter was also posted for May 31.
Babloo is lodged at Bareilly jail since June 11, 1999.
The court also deferred to May 31 the pronouncement of its order on Babloo's plea to get custodial parole for 10 days to recuperate following an eye operation.
He had pleaded that he was required to stay at a hygienic place outside the prison to recover after an operation in his left eye on April 30 in Lucknow.
Babloo, extradited from Singapore in 1995, is accused of
threatening businessman Sheetal Prasad Singh who had lodged
the FIR against him and others with the Delhi Police Special
Cell in 2003.
Babloo, along with his three associates Fazl-ur Rehman,
Pradeep Khurana and Jitender Singh, is facing trial for
allegedly making threatening calls to Singh to extort Rs 25
lakh from him between March 2003 and April 2003.
Khurana and Singh are out on bail while Rehman is in judicial custody at Tihar jail here.
