With the TRS-led agitation for Telangana statehood gaining momentum, the BJP's Andhra Pradesh unit today said it has resolved to launch a people's movement soon in support of a separate state.
"The party would soon launch a long-term people's agitation separately to achive statehood for the Telangana region," state BJP president and former union minister Bandaru Dattatreya told reporters.
He said a meeting of intellectuals and various pro-Telangana organisations would be held here on December four to formulate an action plan.
Alleging that the Congress party, in power both in the State and at the Centre, was the main hurdle in creation of a separate Telangana state, Dattatreya stressed on the need for mounting pressure on the ruling party to bring a Bill in parliament for granting statehood to the region.
Former Union minister C Vidyasagar Rao, party's national secretary N Indrasen Reddy, BJP floor leader in the state assembly G Kishan Reddy were present at the press conference.
Meanwhile, a five-member delegation of the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) led by the party's floor leader in the legislative assembly E Rajender met Dattatreya and other senior leaders at the state BJP headquarters and sought their support for their agitation. Former TRS MP Vinod Kumar was also in the delegation.
The BJP has been in favour of carving a separate Telangana state.
Later, Rajender told reporters that a TRS delegation would also meet BJP leader LK Advani in Delhi to seek his party's support for the Telangana cause.
