Varsity aims to curb malpractice in attendance register; colleges to upload attendance on weekly basis.

If the latest experiment of the university becomes a success, the practice of creating fake attendances for students in order to show 75% presence will be a thing of the past. In a bid to curb malpractice in registering attendance, Gujarat Technological University (GTU) has enforced a new system, asking affiliated colleges to upload weekly attendance records on a specially designed portal.

The portal, however, is not hacking-proof. Nor there are any arrangements to check whether the college authorities are maintaining and uploading attendance records sincerely. GP Vadodaria, examination controller of GTU, said it is imperative to trust the college principal and heads for uploading the right statistics. "However, we have made provision of locking up the records once they are uploaded, to prevent editing or tampering.

It’s aimed at keeping a watch on the student's interest in classroom studies, to find out if private tuitions are being run by the institute teachers, and also to take immediate actions," he said.

Vadodaria said that the portal is efficiently designed and it has specifics with attendance for semester, subject and days. The professor will have to feed 'present', 'absent', and 'leave' in the sheet.  "We have given the password to access the portal only to the institute principal, and also instructed that the system should be monitored only by them, or the head of the department," he said.
