Odisha-cadre, 1996 batch IPS officer Arun Bothra, who is on deputation to CBI in its Kolkata wing, will be supervising the investigation into the Ishrat Jahan fake encounter case after the registration of FIR by the premier investigating agency.
Hailing from Jaipur, 1968-born Bothra is a bachelor of arts (BA). He joined IPS in 1996 and was the superintendent of police of Naxal-infested Koraput district in Odisha. During his tenure in Koraput, he was instrumental in boosting the morale of cops fighting the naxals. In 2004, he had a narrow escape when he was attacked by naxals in his office.
Bothra was sent to CBI on central deputation on July 30, 2010 for a four year period. He is currently posted as DIG, special crime branch of CBI in Kolkata.
The investigating agency is expected to file the fresh FIR by Saturday. Sources close to the development told DNA that Bothra will be supervising the case, while Binay Kumar will be the investigating officer of the case. Coincidently, Kumar is also investigating the Sohrabuddin and Tulsi Prajapati fake encounter cases.
Sources said that Kumar, who will be handling the third fake encounter case conducted from Gujarat, is already aware about the cops who have been involved in these encounters. "Most of the accused involved in Sohrabuddin and Tulsiram Prajapati fake encounter case are also accused in Ishrat fake encounter," sources told DNA.
