In a bizarre incident, an oil mafia and his associates tried to set the district supply officer (DSO) of Budaun district on fire after dousing him with kerosene.
The DSO and his team who were held hostage managed to escape and took refuge in a police station on Thursday.
The DSO Neeraj Singh and his team had gone to raid a fair price shop in the Zareef Nagar police station area following complaints of hoarding and supply of adulterated kerosene.
He was accompanied by six subordinates, two guards and a driver. The shop owners and their associates attacked the raiding team after they sealed the shop. Surprisingly, the husband of the Samajwadi Party supported local block pramukh led the mob which attacked the DSO and his team.
When Singh and his team members tried to escape in their car, the mob attacked the vehicle, doused it with kerosene and tried to set it on fire.
Singh tried to run from the spot but the attackers roughed him up, doused him with kerosene and tried to torch him. The DSO somehow managed to reach the Zareef Nagar police station. However, his team members were badly beaten up.
