DUBAI: Jamila Khatoon, a 110-year old woman from Maharashtra, will be the oldest Indian pilgrim to perform Haj this year.
Khatoon, who hails from Thane district of Maharashtra, will be the most senior person from the country to perform the pilgrimage, according to the data available with the Consulate General of India, Jeddah.
About 157,000 pilgrims are expected to arrive from India for Haj this year. Of these, 107,000 would be performing Haj through the Haj Committee of India and 47,000 through the private tour operators.
This is the largest number of pilgrims to arrive from India for Haj so far, making India the second largest country to send pilgrims to Saudi Arabia after Indonesia.
Thousands of people from across the world gather in Mecca -- Islam's holiest place -- every year to perform Haj.
