Surrendered militants have a reason to smile as the Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) government announced a major relief package for them on Monday.
Under the package, if surrendered militants are killed by ultras,
their kin will be entitled to ex-gratia and government jobs. The next of kin of such militants will also be entitled to a cash compensation of Rs4 lakh if they decide not to take up jobs.
The decision was taken by chief minister Omar Abdullah at a high-level meeting of officials from the home, finance and general administration departments in Srinagar.
Omar approved the extension of benefits of SRO-43 to surrendered militants. SRO was so far limited to civilians who die in crossfire or are killed by militants. Under SRO, kin of the slain get Rs1 lakh compensation and government jobs.
“This [extending benefits under SRO 43] will help provide necessary succour to their [surrendered militants’] families,” a spokesman said.
