Holding the National Conference-Congress government fully responsible for the prevailing unrest in Jammu and Kashmir, the state BJP today said it is high time chief minister Omar Abdullah quit in the interest of peace and stability in the region.

"The state administration and its political apparatus have contributed towards deterioration of the situation in Kashmir and its arch has now expanded to some areas of Jammu province," state BJP president Shamsher Singh Manhas told reporters in Jammu.

He alleged that political inexperience of the young chief minister and his team of ministers to handle the crisis in the Valley was one of the major factors that led to deaths of many youths in last nearly three months of turmoil.

This also led to encouraging the separatists and anti-national elements who are "calling the shots now," Manhas claimed.

"Under these circumstances, Omar Abdullah has lost moral and constitutional authority and he should quit from the government at the earliest to save the state from further deterioration," the state BJP chief said.

Condemning the alleged desecration of a holy book in the US, Manhas appealed to the people to maintain peace.

The BJP leader also cautioned the Centre against taking any step for dilution of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) as it would give fillip to militancy in the state.
