Outrage in North East over the murder of Arunachal student by a mob in Delhi

The Arunachal Pradesh government and student organisations in the Northeast have condemned the murder of Nido Taniam.

“We condemn the incident. Action should be taken against the perpetrators of the crime,” Tako Dabi, MLA and advisor to Arunachal Pradesh chief minister Nabam Tuki, told dna.

“The boy died due to the utter negligence of the police personnel. After the incident, when they should have taken him to a hospital, they took him to his residence. The boy died because he didn’t get any treatment,” Dabi added. “So, we demand action against the erring police personnel as well.”

The North East Students’ Organisation (NESO) condemned the incident and asked why people from the region were always targeted.

“The prime minister had assured us that students from the Northeast who are studying outside would be protected. Where is his assurance now?” NESO adviser Samujjal Bhattacharyya asked. He said the growing incidents of attacks on northeasterners only suggested that the “PM is sleeping”.

Condemning the incident, the All Nishi Students’ Union, Arunachal (ANSU) said it was unfortunate that the region was always viewed as a separate entity.

“It was a racial attack. We hope that action will be taken against the murderers and the police personnel early,” ANSU president Sikka Gapok said.

The Asian Centre for Human Rights (ACHR) has also condemned the incident. It urged the Delhi Police to invoke the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989, against the murderers.

“There have been increasing racial attacks on people from the Northeast in Delhi. In addition to the provisions of the Indian Penal Code, the Delhi Police must invoke the Act against the murderers as well as the Delhi Police personnel who failed to protect the victim,” said Suhas Chakma, director of ACHR.

BJP calls student’s murder barbaric
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)on Friday condemned the death of an Arunachal Pradesh student after he was beaten up. “The death of a northeast student in New Delhi after being beaten up is barbaric and condemnable,” BJP leader Arun Jaitley said in a comment on Twitter. “Such incidents do not help us as a nation,” he said. Nido Taniam, a 20-year-old student from Arunachal Pradesh, who was allegedly beaten up by shopkeepers in Delhi Wednesday, succumbed to his injuries Thursday morning.

AAP blames police for student’s death
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Friday put the onus of the death of a student from Arunachal Pradesh on Delhi police. “The way police picked him up and then again dropped him to the same spot needs to be looked into,” AAP spokesperson Dilip Pandey said. “The way lawlessness is prevailing in the state needs to be checked and Delhi police will have to take the responsibility to stop such incidents,” he said. Nido Taniam, a 20-year-old student from Arunachal Pradesh, who was allegedly assaulted by shopkeepers in south Delhi’s Lajpat Nagar I area Wednesday, died of his injuries on Thursday.

MP demands immediate arrest of killers
Lok Sabha member from Arunachal Pradesh Takam Sanjoy on Friday demanded immediate arrest and trial of culprits involved in murder of Nido Tania who was reportedly been beaten to death in Lagpat Nagar area of South Delhi. a student from the state in New Delhi. “Even after 48-hours of the incident the police failed to arrest the culprits involved in the crime, which exposed the discriminatory attitude of the people from mainland India towards the people of North East,” Sanjoy said. “This is not a new incident. in which NE students has been victimised.”
