NEW DELHI: A total of 1,086 candidates are in the fray for the coming Delhi Assembly elections after the scrutiny of documents on Wednesday, with 13 constituencies having over 20 candidates expressing their intent to contest.
The maximum number of candidates are from Rajouri Garden where 27 are in fray followed by Sultanpur Majri and Karawal Nagar with 26 aspirants.
There are 24 opponents for Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit who is fighting from New Delhi Assembly segment while BJP's chief ministerial candidate V K Malhotra has 11 opposing him.
BJP Delhi chief Harsh Vardhan has 22 opponents in Krishna Nagar from where he is fighting.
The constituencies where over 20 contestants have filed nominations also include :Tilak Nagar (20), Mundka (20), Babarpur (21), Mustafabad (21), Sangam Vihar (21), Sadar Bazar (21), Matia Mahal (22), and Burari (25).
The least number of candidates are from Bijwasan where only six contestants will contest the elections. There are eight each candidates in Bawana, Ghonda and Ambedkar Nagar.
Congress is contesting on 70 seats while BJP on 69 seats, which includes three candidates of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) fighting on the saffron party's symbol. The SAD is fighting on one seat in its own symbol. Mayawati-led BSP is also contesting all seats.
Among the 1,086 contestants, some of them are covering candidates for parties. These candidates are expected to withdraw their nomination papers by November 14, the last date for withdrawing nominations.
