Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has cancelled alternate housing for 1,104 project-affected people who were included in the list provided by Gujarat high court in its order dated July 5. Of them, 894 could not be contacted for serving notice for allocation despite repeated attempts.

According to a AMC, 3,798 families were allotted alternate housing where they had to move in by July 31, failing which their allocation stood cancelled.  "We tried to contact people who were included in the 2002 survey list but failed to trace them. We had no other option but to cancel their allocation made as per court orders," said Capt Dilip Mahajan, executive director of Sabarmati Riverfront Development Corporation.  The civic body also cancelled allocations made to 127 people as their establishments were on private land and thus ineligible for the benefits. Similarly, 83 allocations were cancelled as they were already allotted alternate housing.

The draw for allocation of 4,319 houses to Sabarmati project-affected people will be organised next week, said Mahajan.
