As the Women's Reservation Bill, cleared by the Union Government, is currently in debate in the Parliament, Congress MP and senior party leader Sonia Gandhi posed tough questions to the PM Modi-led government over the years it will take to implement the reservation in Lok Sabha.
Commencing the Lok Sabha debate over female quota in the Parliament, Sonia Gandhi urged the government to implement the Women's Reservation Bill right away, and not to wait till 2029, as has been estimated by the Opposition.
Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury on Wednesday alleged that the words "secular" and "socialist" were missing from the Preamble in the copies of the Constitution given to lawmakers on the opening day of the new Parliament building.
Sonia Gandhi said in the Lok Sabha, "Congress party supports this Bill. We are happy regarding the passing of the Bill but we are also concerned. I would like to ask a question. Indian women have been waiting for their political responsibilities for the last 13 years. Now they are being asked to wait for a few more years. How many years? Is this behaviour with Indian women appropriate? INC demands that the Bill be implemented with immediate effect but Caste census should also be done and arrangement for reservation of SC, ST and OBC women should be made..."
Speaking in the Lok Sabha during the discussion on the Women's Reservation Bill, Sonia Gandhi said, "On behalf of the Congress party, I stand in support of the 'Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam 2023' (Women's Reservation Bill)."
She said that the Indian woman has patience like the ocean.
"She has worked for everyone's betterment like a river," the Lok Sabha MP from Uttar Pradesh's Rae Bareli said.
