The All India Confederation of Organisations for Persons with Mental Disabilities has urged the Government to fix a pay timescale for special BEd teachers, teaching/training students with disabilities.

Confederaton president Namburajan said there are 2000 special teachers working in special schools. "The government should focus on them and appoint more teachers," he told reporters here last night.

Though the State commissioner for disabled had also sent a proposal to the government, recommending appointment of 750 teachers, 250 "Care givers" and 250 therapists to the special schools, it had not been implemented, he said.

The Confederation plans to organise Regional level Human chains to bring to the government's notice problems in this field which need immediate attention. About 300 children and their parents formed a human chain yesterday in this city.

Meanwhile,a confederation press relase today said though it is mandatory for the state to run schools and other training institutes with different kind of abilities as per the Persons with Disabilities Act 1995, there is only such school functioning in Chennai.
