Formal talks on a range of bilateral issues todayNEW DELHI: In the informal meeting between Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his British counterpart Gordon Brown on Sunday it is understood that ways to
enhance business ties and cooperation on global challenges like terrorism and climate change were discussed.
Singh hosted a private dinner for Brown and his wife Sara Brown, who arrived here earlier in the day on a two-day visit.
Formal talks between Singh and Brown will take place on Monday during which the two leaders will deliberate on a whole range of bilateral issues, regional matters and international subjects of mutual interest.
Soon after his arrival with a large high-level delegation on his first visit to India as Prime Minister, Brown said he had come to strengthen and push the “partnership of equals”.
He sought closer cooperation on global challenges like the fight against terrorism and climate change besides favouring enhancement of bilateral business ties.
Earlier, favouring a greater role for New Delhi in the global arena, Brown backed India’s bid for permanent membership of the UN Security Council and sought expansion to G-8 to include India in it in view of the “new realities”.
“India should become a member of the UNSC,” Brown said while speaking at the UK-India Entrepreneurship Summit at Delhi.
