PM Modi announces US $2 billion line of credit to Bangladesh

In a special gesture, Modi was received at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and a number of her Ministerial colleagues including Finance Minister AMA Muhith, Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed and Agriculture Minister Moti Choudhury.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday arrived in Dhaka to a red carpet welcome on his maiden visit. 

In a special gesture, Modi was received at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and a number of her Ministerial colleagues including Finance Minister AMA Muhith, Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed and Agriculture Minister Moti Choudhury.

Prime Minister Modi was given a guard of honour at the airport. All total 22 agreements have been signed between the two country including ratification of Land Boundary Agreement. India has announced to give US $2 billion in credit line to Bangladesh.

He says the relationship will be approached with the aspect of mutual respect and friendship. Modi is now going through all the details of the pacts signed and how they will be game changer in the days to come. PM also hoped thatconsensus will be reached on Teesta pact soon.

PM Modi addresses the concerns of trade imbalance, something which has been a cause of concern for Bangladesh. He says that India will increase investment manifold.

Bangladesh and India to swap 18th-century border enclaves

Bangladesh and India will seal an agreement simplifying their 4,000-km (2,500-mile) border at the weekend, over four decades after the neighbours first tried to untangle complex territorial rights set down in 1713.

The agreement will be one of several to be finalised during a two-day state visit by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi beginning on Saturday, Dhaka's Foreign Minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali told journalists on Friday. In 1974, the then leaders of the two countries - Indira Gandhi of India and Sheikh Mujibur Rahman of Bangladesh - agreed to swap almost 200 enclaves of land located in one country but officially belonging to the other.

 "But with the assassination of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman (in 1975), along with the almost all the members of his family, the process of the agreement stopped for a long time," Ali said. The agreement, which has since been updated, will be "a historic milestone in the relationship between the two neighbouring south Asian countries," he added.

Mamata Banerjee arrives Dhaka ahead of Modi's visit

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee arrived in Dhaka, a day ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's two-day maiden visit to Bangladesh.

State minister for foreign affairs Shahriar Alam received her at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in the evening.

Foreign Ministry officials said the West Bengal Chief Minister would witness the signing of documents on Land Boundary Agreement (LBA) to be exchanged between the two countries after talks between Modi and his Bangladeshi counterpart Sheikh Hasina.

Unprecedented political unanimity in over Modi's visit

On the eve of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit, Bangladesh witnessed an unprecedented unanimity among rival political parties, with the ruling Awami League and the opposition BNP on the same page over having better ties with India.

"It is due to the leadership of our leader and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina that there is such an unanimity among the parties regarding Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit," said State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam.

"This not just a visit of a head of a nation to Dhaka. But a new chapter in the relationship between both India and Bangladesh. Both the countries need each other, there are sectors where India has made massive progress, there are areas where we have made huge progress," he said.
