Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is on two-day visit to the holy city in his Lok Sabha constituency on Friday laid the foundation stone of the Trade Facilitation Centre and Crafts Museum to develop and promote handloom products of Varanasi. Modi also adopted Jayapur village under the Saansad Adarsh Gram Yojana(MPs' Model Village Scheme). This is the Prime Minister’s first visit to his Lok Sabha constituency after assuming the charge in New Delhi.

He said "big people" in the last 60 years made such big talk that these could not be executed on ground. "I, a small man, will bring about big things through my small talk." Taking note of the presence of large number of women among the crowd, Modi condemned the practice of female foeticide and said "those who look upon the girl child as a liability should ponder as to how will mankind survive if we are left in a world with no women".

"If we kill girl child in the mother's womb, then what will happen to the world. If only 800 girls are born against 1000 boys, then 200 boys will remain unmarried. Will government do this job?," he said addressing villagers as he asked them not to depend on government for everything.

"Our villagers need to give up the notion that it is the government that is the doer and they are only beneficiaries. The Sansad Adarsh Gram Yojana is an effort in that direction. It aims to empower villagers and provide them with opportunities to exercise these choices", he said adopting the village under the MPs Model Village scheme.

Mentiong that there is no woman in the country, who has not heard of Banarasi saree, Modi said, "In the coming years, 20 crore daughters will get married, it means country will need 20 crore sarees. It's every mother's dream that her daughter should wear Banarasi sari. Banarasi Sari doesn't need any kind of branding, every person of the country koow about it."

"Many people say weaving can be done faster with the use of computer. We need technology up-gradation to compete with the world and we have begun the work in this direction," Modi added.

Stating that Banaras is not an unknown name to the world, Modi said, "E-business is increasing and there are several opportunities in the global market. If India has to develop the eastern part must develop rapidly. We have dedicated ourselves to developing the eastern parts of the nation."

Modi also announced a package of Rs. 2,375 crore to revive 16 banks in eastern Uttar Pradesh. "We have decided to offer a package of Rs. 2375 crore. The amount would be used to revive banks in 16 districts," he said.

"You have instilled faith in me and given me love. I assure you am for you, will dedicate all my efforts for development work here," Modi added.

Earlier in the day, ahead of Modi's two-day visit to the holy city, people performed religious rituals in Jayapur village. Modi will also be visiting Jayapur village and address people there and may even announce its adoption under his Saansad Adarsh Gram Yojana as an attempt to empower villagers.

The Prime Minister, who had expressed his intention to transform the country "from scam India to skill India" - alluding to the numerous corruption allegations which the previous UPA government found itself mired in and pointing towards the need to encourage entrepreneurship - is also likely to inaugurate a skill development centre based on the Public Private Partnership model.
