In a freak accident, a 53-year-old police official died after suffering serious injuries when a fire engine hit him during a mock drill here, officials said today.

DSP B Raveendraprasad got crushed between a compound wall and the fire engine while participating in a mock disaster management drill on how to manage a post-explosion situation here last evening, police said.

Though he cried out in writhing pain, it took some time for others to rush to the help of Raveendradas as they thought the tragedy he met with was also a make-belief exercise, eyewitnesses said.

According to doctors, the hapless police official's hip and waist bones were broken and prostate gland was damaged. He had also suffered internal bleeding. Though an emergency surgery was performed, he succumbed to injuries this morning.

Raveendradas was enacting a situation in which a police officer was to rush to the spot of a bomb blast on getting the message about it. The fire engine, which was also part of the drill, sped and hit him as he was sprinting after getting down from his jeep.

Though he tried to evade the vehicle, he could not do so as the compound wall at his back prevented maneuverability, police said.

A native of Mavelikkara near here, Raveendraprasad is survived by his wife and a son.
