In a move that will surely be considered controversial, the Allahabad High Court on Tuesday asked the chief secretary to ensure the children of all government officials, those serving in the local bodies, judiciary and politicians should send their wards to government school.
The court claimed that only then would the courts be serious enough to look into the requirements of these schools. Hearing a slew of writ petitions filed by Umesh Kumar Singh and others, Justice Sudhir Agarwar directed the Chief Secretary to ensure steps were taken to ensure the directions were carried out within the six months, before the start of the academic session. The court also directed him to submit a compliance report in six months time to make sure the order was carried out.
The issue came up when discussing the appointment of assistant teachers in the state's primary schools. During the course of hearing, the court noted the deplorable condition of these schools and observed that although they are catering to the needs of 90% population of children, their condition could only be described as shabby.
