Finance minister Pranab Mukherjee today expressed his desire to retire from active politics after the end of the current UPA tenure in 2014.

"....when this tenure will be over, I will be 79. Perhaps that is the time for having a little bit of rest", he said when asked if he desired to move into the Rashtrapati Bhawan some day.

The senior most minister in the Manmohan Singh government said, "I will go to my study where I have collected some large number of books which I did not have the time to read".

He was speaking at the HT Leadership Summit.

Mukherjee was elected to Rajya Sabha first in July 1969 and it was not until 2004 that he entered Lok Sabha from Jangipur constituency in West Bengal.
