Prasar Bharati seeks more say in posting of information service officials

Prasar Bharati (PB) wants to have a say in the postings and transfers of IIS (Indian Information Service) officers in PB.

In a letter written to Bimal Julka, secretary, I&B ministry, Prasar Bharati CEO Jawhar Sircar has contended that despite assurances that the "ministry always considers recommendations of PB", this has not been evident for the past two-and-a-half years.

"I have made several suggestions for posting and transfer of IIS officers in the new divisions of Akashvani and Doordarshan. I have also brought out certain interesting points about the 'edited' version of the interview of Narendra Modi on April 27," he said in a letter, dated August 8.

He spoke of rationalising the monitoring mechanism of the 300-plus IIS officers posted with PB.

"To simplify matters even further, I would suggest a simple solution: Request the ministry to bifurcate the work on a pro-rata basis, most probably 60:40. Then postings of IIS officers to PB could be decided by the PB Board and orders issued only after informing the ministry," Sircar said.

He said PB was "completely in the dark" about career details of officers, and that these should be shared with PB. "I hope you will consider this proposal favourably as we do not want to land up in issues such as the deliberately edited interview of Narendra Modi on April 27, which created a controversy," Sircar said. PB can be held responsible only if it is allowed to monitor the news division.
