The government on Wednesday came under attack in the Lok Sabha over rising prices with the opposition questioning the efficacy of steps to address the problem but the ruling Congress countered the charge by attributing inflation and global conditions.

Senior BJP leader and former finance minister Yashwant Sinha moved the motion on price rise in Lok Sabha on Wednesday afternoon, asking the government to take necessary measures to control inflation and bring relief to the common man.

He reminded that it was the 12th time since the UPA came to power that the House was discussing the price rise issue, and said that this cannot be a ‘school debate’ affair, and wanted the government to take follow-up action so that there would not be a need to discuss the issue again in the winter session.

“We will not accept inflation of more than 3%,” Sinha said.

Congress fielded law minister Salman Khurshid, who argued in his friendly bantering tone, that it was better that there was increase in employment accompanied by inflation rather than unemployment and no inflation.
