The Congress asked the Ministry of Home Affairs to provide security and protection to its Punjab MLA and cabinet minister Navjot Singh Sidhu on gro-unds that he is a high-risk target. The party has asked Ministry to provide Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) security for Sidhu saying he holds a "highly visible profile" which makes him an easy target to criminals.
In a letter written to Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, the Congress mentioned that Sidhu has been carrying out campaigns against drug mafia and criminals in
Punjab which has put a target on his back.
It also stated that the threats against Sidhu had escalated after he left the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and joined the Congress.
"Navjot Singh Sidhu has taken on Akali Dal (Badal) and also their anti-people policies. He has also exposed the unholy nexus between the Akal Dal (Badal) and certain criminal elements on numerous occasions," the letter read.
In 2014, the Punjab government withdrew security cover given to Sidhu by removing the four guards attached to him after he launched a virulent attack on the ruling SAD and Badals during Haryana Assembly polls campaign.
Before this, Sidhu had 11 security personnel attached to him when he was a Member of Parliament.
