The proxy server used by Monu Oza through a private virtual network has once again shown how such servers are turning out to be a headache for investigating agencies. Oza had used a proxy server to send a terror mail that threatened cruel attacks on Ahmedabad. The attacks referred to terrorists targeting city schools.
A cop from Ahmedabad city police said that almost all hackers and cyber miscreants use proxy servers to shoot such emails. The source said that terrorists also used the proxy servers to send such mails and they also do it by hacking the entire network of a given area.
"For instance they can hack into the wi-fi network of your computer by just being near your house," the cop said.
A cop said that if a private proxy server is being used it is difficult but not impossible to trace the exact Internet Protocol address.
The private proxy servers are usually brought on the internet from USA.
"Most of the time private proxy servers are purchased for around $12 per month. Some people then misuse it," said city-based cyber expert, Sunny Vaghela told DNA.
Talking to DNA, Kiran Patel, the police inspector who played an important role in nabbing Oza said that the youth had purchased VPN for $ 11.
"Proxy servers can be easily used to spread cyber terrorism in the country," a police source said. The cyber crime cell of the DCB has been dealing with cases where the accused had used the proxy server for many such activities. The source also said that proxy servers are also used by many to hack into government website to get sensitive data.
"Sometimes locating a hacker, who uses a proxy server, becomes difficult as it is a time consuming process and the internet protocol (IP) address is not immediately revealed," a source said.
