Public sector banks to hire 63,200 persons this fiscal

The country's largest bank SBI will alone recruit 20,000 clerical staff and 1,200 officer level employees.

Public sector banks will hire 63,200 persons in the current financial year, finance minister P Chidambaram said today.

The country's largest bank SBI will alone recruit 20,000 clerical staff and 1,200 officer level employees.

Besides, other public sector banks will hire 22,000 officers and 20,000 clerical staff in this fiscal.

"So there are many opportunities for the young men and women to build the career in banking. It's a very attractive career and young men and women must take advantage that the banks are recruiting so many people," Chidambaram told reporters after meeting heads of public sector banks and financial institutions here.

There were 84,489 vacancies at various levels in the state-owned banks at the end of the last financial year.

Most of the state-owned banks have undertaken recruitment drives in the recent years.

The public sector banks have a sanctioned strength of about 8 lakh employees as on March 31, 2012.

Earlier, the Indian Bank's Association had advised banks to take steps to operationalise a coaching programme in naxalite-affected areas and in Jammu and Kashmir to prepare youngsters in those areas to successfully compete in the exams for recruitment in banks.
